The unmarried are far more likely to die from all causes, including coronary heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, cancer, cirrhosis, automobile accidents, murder, and suicide. Being married also seems to have the power to heal. Cancer patients tend to have better recovery rates when they are married and have support.
"Marriage tends to improve mental health," Bartlein reports. "Spouses talk to each other about their worries, dreams and disappointments. Both men and women do better if they have a companion for life's ups and downs."
